Sunday Morning Shawl - Live! (and a discount code)

The Sunday Morning Shawl is now live under the “Patterns” tab of this website and on Ravelry!

There are so many special things for me wrapped up in this design. The yarn was purchased with a dear friend at Black Mountain Yarn Shop in the Fall of 2019, before the pandemic, before so many things that I never could have dreamed. At the time, it was a huge splurge and the Woolfolk used here is so luxurious. I hadn’t started designing patterns when it was purchased but I had all of these ideas in my head for what these colors could be together and it was a kind of leap of faith to really invest in the dream of designing.

When I finally sat down to work on this project, I tried out a few different design ideas,. But this winter, I really just needed a project in my life that was incredibly cozy, incredibly simple, and soothing no matter what the day held. Its name comes from the Commodores song “Easy Like Sunday Morning” and I think that encapsulates it perfectly. I also love that, because of its generous size, it can look so different depending on how you drape it. More stripes! More color! Less color - a mishmash of the two.

I love to include one new skill that a knitter may not have tried in each pattern that I write, and in this pattern it is the applied i-cord edging which is knit on the shawl after it is complete. It adds such a nice, finished edge to it and really ties it all together. In this design, I did the edging in turquoise, but in the pattern it is written for color B (in this case, the tan/khaki) just to make sure you have enough yarn to complete it. (It would be SO sad to get halfway through and run out of yarn).

This month I am also, amazingly, celebrating my first year of work as a knitting designer. Sunday Morning Shawl coming 7/16

Hello! We are back from just the most magical vacation I could ever have imagined. It was so, very, incredibly hot. But nearly everything we did was so, so perfect. I will be sure to share more soon. For now, I wanted to pop in and share that the Sunday Morning shawl will be coming this Friday, 7/16. I wrote just a little bit about it on my IG today but this pattern has been the coziest, simplest thing I have knit all year this year and I really hope that if you are needing some comfort and quiet stitches, this one makes it on your needles wherever you find yourself this summer.

More details on Friday, but this design is knit in four colors of Woolfolk Tynd (two skeins of one color, and one each of three others). If you have the chance to knit with this yarn, I highly recommend it.

Coming Soon: Paeonia Shawl

I took a break from posting last week in solidarity with amplifying Black voices in our community and focusing my feed on sharing resources for white folks interested in educating themselves on systemic oppression, police reform and the validity of protests. In the wake of no arrests still for the murder of Breonna Taylor, and hearing of how the families of former victims called the family of George Floyd saying, “Don’t expect much to change,” and the complete misuse of force across the country and straight from our president towards peaceful protestors, it really didn’t even seem like I should post about anything else for a long time.

I saw a post the other day that reminded me, however, that the work that we are in is a marathon, not a sprint. I continued to knit all last week after reading the morning paper, and while watching movies safe at home, and listening to podcasts. This was good, but just because I am back to talking about knitting today, know that the work is still very much ongoing with me and my community.

What was I knitting all last week? I was knitting what I’m calling the Paeonia Shawl, my first ever knit design. This idea has been rolling around in my mind and heart for years and was sparked into being the first time I saw this yarn in my local yarn store a few months ago. In the wake of those who are putting their actual lives on the line and demonstrating incredible courage in the world, it seems so trite and trivial to call the work of this design as an act of hope or belief in moving past fear, but in me for many ways it was and it has been. I am so excited to share this design with you, reader, and the world.

From my call for testers on IG this morning I think I have all of the folks that I need to test this design, but be on the lookout for the official pattern’s release next month and for more information on this design the closer we get. Thank you to everyone who has responded to this design in such a positive way and for all of the love I’ve felt today, it truly means the world to me.
